Indigenous Colours Hand Streamers

Indigenous Colours Hand Streamers

Movement and dance are an important part of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and are commonly used in storytelling and celebrations. These simple hand streamers are a great DIY craft that can lead into a lovely movement and play activity.

STEP 1

Choose the colours you wish to use to create your hand streamers and cut two 2m lengths of each colour. We have chosen the colours of the Aboriginal flag. Supervision is recommended when using scissors.

STEP 2

Take one of the 2m lengths and fold it in half and then in half again. Take the end with a double loop and attach it to a wooden ring using a cow hitch knot. Once attached, you will notice that one of the loose ends will still be looped. Cut this with scissors so all the ends are loose.

STEP 3

Repeat step 2 with your remaining colours to complete your first ring. Make a second ring so you have one for each hand.

STEP 4

Loop each ring over a finger on each hand and then swirl, twirl and dance around to make the streamers fly!

STEP 5

You could also make some hand streamers using the colours of the Torres Strait Islander flag!
