Scented Felt Balls

Scented Felt Balls

This easy to make craft is the perfect activity for individual or group crafting sessions and supports sensory, reminiscence and aromatherapy use. They are ideal for placing in a car, wardrobe or drawers, or for keeping in your pocket or on a walker.

When using this craft for reminiscence purposes, we recommend choosing scents that are easily recognisable, and that you ask open ended questions to allow a discussion about the memories that may be evoked from the chosen scent.

STEP 1

Cut a length of embroidery thread approximately 40cm long in your chosen colour. Thread a needle onto the middle of the thread and tie the ends in a double knot. Supervision is recommended when using scissors and sewing needles.

STEP 2

Choose four felt balls in different colours. Push the needle through the middle of one of the balls. Continue to push the felt ball onto the embroidery thread until it stops at the double knot.

STEP 3

Thread the remaining three felt balls onto the embroidery thread in the same way pushing them down the thread until they sit up against the previous ball. Cut the needle off the embroidery thread and tie a double knot at the end of the felt balls to secure them in place.

STEP 4

Tie the ends of the embroidery thread onto a split ring. Use a double or triple knot to secure before trimming any excess thread.

STEP 5

Choose your preferred scent and add a drop or two of the oil to each of the felt balls. The scent will begin to fade over time so don’t forget to add more drops of oil as required. We’ve used lavender, which is a familiar and calming scent, but we have a wide range of essential oils for you to choose from!
