Spring Flower Seedlings

Spring Flower Seedlings

Celebrate the start of Spring by growing your own flowers! Use your Greenhouse Planter Box to plant flower seeds during September and watch them closely to see the seeds germinate and grow!

This activity provides a meaningful opportunity to connect with nature and the changing seasons while encouraging gentle participation, sensory engagement, conversation and a sense of purpose. Plant the flowers in a community garden and watch them grow from seeds to plants to create an enjoyable activity that your residents can revisit throughout Spring and Summer.

STEP 1

Take one peat pellet and place it in a paper cup, then add some warm water until it is approximately 3/4 of the way up the side of the peat pellet. Repeat with three more paper cups and peat pellets and set the cups aside so the peat pellets can absorb the water.

STEP 2

Construct the clear house box following the included instructions.

STEP 3

Your peat pellets should have absorbed the water by now. If not, wait a few more minutes. Once the water is absorbed, remove the thin casing on each peat pellet and fluff the soil up in the cups. Divide the soil evenly into the 6 wells of the egg carton.

STEP 4

Use your pinky finger or a pencil to create a divot in the middle of each of the filled egg wells.

STEP 5

Place one flower seed into each of the divots before pressing the soil down firmly on top.

STEP 6

Place the egg carton into the clear house box and close the lid. Move the box into a spot indoors that gets a lot of sunlight, such as a windowsill, and wait for the seeds to germinate. You may need to spray them with water every now and then.

STEP 7

Once your flowers are strong enough and the weather has warmed, carefully plant them outside into a garden bed in the sunlight and continue watching them grow throughout Spring and Summer!
