String Path Challenge

String Path Challenge

String Path Challenge is a fun and engaging activity that challenges participants to recreate a path using yarn and a series of markers. Using a reference card as a guide, participants carefully weave the yarn around the markers to match the pattern shown.

This hands-on activity supports fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, visual tracking, concentration and problem-solving. The tactile nature of the yarn also provides gentle sensory stimulation, making it suitable for a wide range of abilities, including those living with dementia.

Simple to set up and easy to adapt with different pattern designs, this String Path Challenge is an enjoyable way to encourage cognitive engagement while providing a rewarding sense of accomplishment.

STEP 1

Download and print out the String Path Challenge Gameboard and Reference Card templates. We recommend printing onto cardboard for longevity and repeated use.

STEP 2

Use scissors to carefully cut out the grey circles of the gameboard template. Supervision is recommended when using scissors. Laminate the gameboard and then re-cut the holes.

STEP 3

Grab nine hi cap tokens and arrange them roughly in the position of the gameboard holes with the opening of the tokens facing down. Lay the gameboard over the top and gently push the hi caps through the holes so the gameboard page sits on the bottom lip of the hi cap tokens. The tokens will have a snug fit but shouldn’t rip or warp the gameboard.

STEP 4

Laminate the reference card. Use a whiteboard marker to draw the first string path on the card.

STEP 5

Cut a length of yarn approximately 1m in length in your chosen colour and attach to the top left corner of the gameboard using sticky tape. You are now ready to play!

STEP 6

Sit a participant in front of the gameboard, making sure the reference card is nearby. Ask them to recreate the pattern as seen on the reference card onto the gameboard. Once the pattern has been completed, wipe the whiteboard marker off the reference card and draw a new pattern, making them progressively harder and more complex as needed as the participant continues to complete them.
